Overview
Discover What’s Sacred to You
Begin your journey to the spiritual home of the Maya, flying into Cancun and traveling to the sacred site of Chichen Itza. We will spend a night at the Mayaland Hotel and Bungalows that directly overlooks the spiritual pyramids of the Maya. Enjoy a day exploring the jungle city of the heart, doing yoga at the base of the temples and being amongst the ruins. Then rejuvenate in the emerald waters of the Ik Kil Cenote, swimming in the open-sky cavern surrounded by gentle waterfalls and jungle vines. The next day, we will continue to venture south to the coast of the Mayan Riviera, setting-up home base at the Karma Yoga Center Villa perched on an enchanted ocean bay for 6 days and 5 nights. Each day, awake and step out your private-patio for calming ocean views and to greet the rising sun. You will have daily options for morning yoga, guided beach meditations, and afternoon healing sessions. There will be many opportunities for personal relaxation, free time, and exploration of the local culture, cuisine, archaeological sites and nature activities.
Bhakti Beach Yoga, The Chakras and Relaxation
Our practice will blend together the juice of Bhakti Yoga and the healing wisdom of the Maya. Each yoga session will open and expand the energy of the 7 chakras, while providing a relaxing and deep connection to mother earth through the elements of the ocean, the lush jungle, the cenotes, sacred sites, and the whispering winds of spirit. Katrina and Michael will guide you to explore and heal the physical, mental, emotional and energetic expressions of each chakra. Our gentle practice will include yoga asana, meditation, mantra, chanting, guided journeying, and relaxing breath techniques. Love yourself, enjoy your healing, and discover your own sacred heart along the Mayan Riviera!

Its grand front doors face directly at the ancient Mayan Observatory Temple. The Hacienda-style architecture of the hotel and bungalows are surrounded by 100 acres of lush tropical gardens, bird sanctuaries, and hidden pyramids yet to be excavated. We will spend our first night in the Yucatan here, after a 2-hour private van ride from the Cancun airport. Chichen Itza: Sacred Mayan City of the Heart
Located in the heart of the Yucatan jungle, Chichen Itza is one of the New 7-wonders of the world. For the Maya, it is considered a living, sacred university to open and heal the heart chakra through the energies and teachings of the cosmic avatar K’uKuulKaan. The city shows the magic and mystery of the Mayan culture through the hieroglyphics, architecture wonders, and the extraordinary cosmological and artistic achievements. Michael will guide the group through the sacred site and share the wisdom offered to him by his Mayan teacher and council elder Miguel Angel Vergara. Miguel Angel was the Culture Director of Chichen Itza for 4-years and has been a shaman in the Mayan tradition for 34-years. Miguel and Michael work together to bring forth the shared light in the wisdom teachings of Yoga and Mayan Shamanism. Discover how the Mayans share a common knowledge of chakras, mantras, sacred art, and healing practices with the Yogis of India
Ik Kil Cenote
Only a few kilometers form the great El Castillo Pyramid in Chichen Itza, the Ik Kil cavern is one of the crown jewel cenotes in the Yucatan. Used by the Maya as a sacred healing place, the cenote is an open-sky cavern surrounded by gentle waterfalls and jungle vines. The cenotes of the Yucatan were created by meteorite debris from the one larger meteorite that is famed to have cause the extinction of the dinosaurs. Thus, the waters are infused with cosmic minerals from outer-sapce that imbue them with unique healing properties only found in in these locations. We will journey to these sacred and refreshing waters for a swim after our visit to Chichen Itza.
About your Guides: Katrina and Michael
Katrina Gustafson
When Katrina took her first yoga class 12 years ago she knew she had found her soul’s home. The practice of yoga has transformed her life so vastly that she left her 12 year career as a high school English teacher to pursue the practice wholeheartedly. She has taken two certified teacher trainings since then, numerous workshops with master teachers, opened Karma Yoga Center, and created a 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certified teacher training that she leads three times a year. Her teaching style is a heart-centered vinyasa (flow) with an emphasis on the spiritual aspects of the practice. She is a student and devotee of Saul David Raye, Dr. Katyayani Poole, and Dr.Manoj Chalom. Katrina subscribes deeply to the practice of bhakti (devotional) yoga, tantric philosophy, and Vedic astrology. She works hard on maintaining the integrity of this ancient practice while bringing it into the 21st century. Though yoga brings her deep joy, her greatest passion is loving on her two boys Maximus and Boden.
Michael Shankara
Michael is a certified yoga teacher and Shaman. He weaves together the practices and wisdom of Bhakti Yoga with Mayan Shamanism. Initiated into the sacred wisdom of the Maya, Michael is the sole apprentice under elder, high priest and shaman Don Miguel Angel Vergara. Michael is also a professional musician and former tropical biologist. He will be providing the live music for the yoga classes and mediations, and co-leading the tours of the Mayan sacred sites.
